New Bern Academy
Description
A photograph of the New Bern Academy that was founded in 1766. The building itself was not completed until 1810. The school building was in use until after March 14, 1862, The Battle of New Bern, when New Bern became under federal control during the Civil War. By that point, New Bern Academy was a Union hospital until the end of the war. This picture presents New Bern Academy with its historic value even though the building is no longer in use. For more information on New Bern Academy, The History of the New Bern Academy by Mary Ellen Gadski is an excellent resource and is available for check out at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library.
